Field marks

  1. Bright white adult iris framed by bold yellow spectacles
  2. Gray head contrasting with olive-green upperparts
  3. Thick, dark, straight bill with a slightly hooked tip
  4. Whitish throat and belly with yellow-washed flanks
  5. Dark wings crossed by two distinct white wing bars
  6. Dark legs and a moderately long, olive-edged tail

HabitatDense scrub and low tangled vegetation, including bramble thickets, woodland edges, second-growth forest, overgrown fields, and streamside or wetland thickets.

BehaviorA deliberate understory foliage-gleaner that moves with short hops and brief flights, often pausing to tilt its head before picking or hovering for insects. It also eats fruit outside the breeding season, remains territorial, and frequently sings from dense cover.
