Field marks

  1. Olive-green upperparts, including back, wings, and tail
  2. Clean white throat, breast, and belly
  3. Gray crown with a bold white eyebrow stripe
  4. Dark eye-line bordering the eyebrow; adult iris dark red but often appears dark at distance
  5. Strong, long dark bill with a small hook at the tip
  6. Stocky body with a fairly short tail and dark gray legs

HabitatDeciduous and mixed forests with dense or shrubby understory; also uses woodland, forest edges, second-growth forest, and other tree-rich habitats during movement periods.

BehaviorSlow, methodical canopy forager that gleans invertebrates from leaves; adults are often heard giving persistent song.
