Field marks
- Compact, sparrow-sized body with a rounded head and medium-length tail
- Olive-gray upperparts with a subtly grayer crown
- Whitish throat and belly with a pale-yellow wash along the sides
- Pale eyebrow, faint gray eye-line, and conspicuous dark eye
- Fairly stout gray bill and dark gray legs
- Plain, rounded wings without wing bars; square to shallow-notched tail tip
HabitatOpen deciduous and mixed woodland, leafy groves, woodland edges, orchards, shade trees, and isolated stands near water; it uses open woods and other wooded or shrubby habitats outside the breeding season.
BehaviorMigratory and primarily arboreal. It forages deliberately among outer foliage, hopping along twigs and gleaning insects from leaves, sometimes hovering briefly; breeding birds are territorial and persistent singers.
