Field marks

  1. Bold black-and-white striping across the head, back, and underparts.
  2. White central crown stripe and strong facial stripes; adult males show blacker cheek and throat.
  3. Thin, fairly long, slightly downcurved dark bill.
  4. Black wings crossed by two broad white wing bars.
  5. Short dark tail with white spots on the outer feathers.
  6. White undertail coverts marked with large black spots.

HabitatDeciduous and mixed forests, especially stands with trunks and branches suitable for bark foraging; also uses woodlands, forest edges, and thickets.

BehaviorCreeps nuthatch-like over trunks and major branches while probing bark for insects.
