Field marks

  1. Bright yellow rump, conspicuous in flight
  2. Small yellow patch on each side of the breast
  3. Slim, pointed dark bill
  4. Full-bodied warbler with a relatively large head and long, narrow tail
  5. White wing bars or patches and white tail spots
  6. Gray to brown-streaked plumage with brighter yellow in breeding birds; throat may be white or yellow among forms

HabitatOpen coniferous and mixed woodland, forest edges, bogs, and other wooded openings; outside the breeding season also open woods, brushy thickets, and shrub-rich habitats.

BehaviorActive canopy and edge forager; gleans insects, sallies after flying prey, and shifts to berries in colder seasons.
