Field marks

  1. Slim bird with an upright stance, long wings, and a relatively long tail
  2. Dull gray-brown upperparts with narrow pale edging on wing and tail feathers
  3. Off-white underparts with fine brown streaking across the throat and upper breast
  4. Brown-streaked crown with a subtle pale area around the eye
  5. Large dark eye and a broad-based, sharply pointed black bill
  6. Short, dark legs and feet

HabitatOpen deciduous and mixed woodland with clearings or scattered trees; also scrub, parkland, large gardens, orchards, and plantations.

BehaviorOften perches upright in the open, making short sallies to catch flying insects and frequently returning to the same perch; migratory.
