Field marks

  1. Entirely white plumage
  2. Long, slender black bill
  3. Yellow eyes and yellow facial skin at the bill base
  4. Long black legs with bright yellow feet
  5. Slim body with a long, flexible neck
  6. Broad, rounded white wings and a short white tail

HabitatShallow fresh, brackish, and saltwater habitats, including marshes, tidal flats, estuaries, mangroves, swamps, ponds, river and lake margins, beaches, and flooded fields.

BehaviorWades in shallow water, alternating patient stalking with active running, wing-flicking, and foot-stirring to flush fish and other small aquatic prey. Often nests colonially with other herons.
