Field marks

  1. Bright yellow head and underparts; adult males show fine chestnut breast streaks
  2. Plain yellow face emphasizing a large, dark eye
  3. Yellow-green back and darker olive wings with yellow-edged feathers
  4. Straight, fine, pointed gray bill
  5. Medium-length, slightly notched tail with yellow inner patches
  6. Small, evenly proportioned body with a rounded head and slender pinkish-brown legs

HabitatShrubby thickets, open woodland edges, streamside vegetation, and wetland margins; outside the breeding season also uses semi-open woodland, scrub, mangroves, gardens, and other secondary growth.

BehaviorActive foliage-gleaner; hops along slender branches, picking insects from leaves, briefly hovering or making short aerial sallies. Singing males often use exposed high perches.
