Magnolia Warbler

Field marks

  1. Small, slim warbler with a fine bill and long, narrow tail.
  2. Adult male shows a black face mask and black neck band with radiating streaks.
  3. Bright yellow throat, breast, and belly; males have bold black flank streaking.
  4. Gray-and-black upperparts with a conspicuous white wing patch or two narrow white wingbars.
  5. Gray-headed females and immatures show a pale white eyering and softer streaking.
  6. Undertail is white at the base with a broad black tail tip, visible in all plumages.

HabitatDense young conifers, especially spruce and hemlock, in coniferous or mixed forest; also uses dense forest edges, shrubs, and low trees outside the breeding season.

BehaviorActive foliage gleaner; hops along branches and takes insects from the undersides of needles and leaves, sometimes flashing white tail spots.
