Field marks
- Small, slim body with a proportionately long tail
- Fine, pointed bill with a dark upper edge and paler lower mandible
- Male blue-gray head and back with a darker face
- Male brick-red throat and breast above a largely white belly
- Broad white moustachial stripe and reddish-orange eye-ring in adult male
- Female brown-gray above and whitish below, often with a soft pink wash
HabitatDense scrub and maquis, bushy slopes, thickets, scrubby open country, and open woodland with scattered trees; nesting cover is typically low and dense.
BehaviorActive but often concealed in dense scrub; makes short flights between bushes and forages mainly for insects and larvae, adding berries and fruit outside the breeding season. Males sing a rapid, rattling series from exposed shrub tops and sometimes in song flight. The cup nest is placed low in dense vegetation.
