Field marks

  1. Large, slender songbird with a long rounded tail
  2. Rufous-brown upperparts and gray-brown face
  3. Bright yellow eye
  4. Long, dark bill with a slight downward curve
  5. Whitish underparts marked with bold dark streaks
  6. Two crisp black-and-white wing bars

HabitatDense brush and low cover: thickets, hedgerows, scrubby fields, forest edges, regenerating woods, and shrubby undergrowth.

BehaviorSecretive ground forager that works leaf litter with quick sideways bill sweeps; also sings from exposed shrubs or treetops.
