Field marks

  1. Solid-black head and upper back in adult males
  2. Brilliant orange underparts and rump
  3. Black wings with a bold white wing bar and orange shoulder patch
  4. Long, thick-based, sharply pointed bill
  5. Long black tail with orange outer feathers
  6. Dark eye and gray legs

HabitatOpen deciduous woodland, forest edges, riverside trees, small groves, orchards, parks, and gardens; outside the breeding season also uses open woodland, flowering trees, and shade-grown plantations.

BehaviorAgile canopy forager that gleans insects, fruit, and nectar from foliage, sometimes hangs upside down or sallies from a perch for flying insects; the female weaves a suspended, pouch-shaped nest from slender fibers.
